First Roots
At First Roots, we understand the complexity of feeding and eating. We understand the process can be overwhelming and filled with fear and anxiety for both the child and their caregivers. At First Roots our goal is to provide empathy and knowledge to help families get through this process.

A modified SOS Feeding Therapy Approach
with First Words & Roots Rehab
We are dedicated to being by your side every step of the journey. We pride ourselves in staying current with research and providing up to date treatment approaches that are successful, attainable and sustainable. Every family deserves to feel relief, and success that comes from developing a strong and healthy relationship with food, including developing feeding skills that will last a lifetime along with fun, enjoyable mealtimes with family and friends. This is why First Roots uses a modified SOS approach to feeding which includes collaboration from your pediatrician, speech language pathologist, occupational therapist, registered dietician and certified lactation consultant.
What is SOS approach to feeding?
The SOS Approach to Feeding is a transdisciplinary program for assessing and treating children with feeding and weight/growth difficulties. Dr. Kay Toomey developed the approach from over 20 years of clinical work with support of Pediatricians, Occupational Therapists, Registered Dietitians, and Speech Pathologists/Therapists. This program integrates motor, oral, behavioral/learning, medical, sensory and nutritional factors and approaches in order to comprehensively evaluate and manage children with feeding/growth problems. It is based on, and grounded philosophically in, the “normal” developmental steps, stages and skills of feeding found in typically developing children.
